The increasing cost of American-made epoxy compounds led a mining company in Chile to approach Sylmasta about formulating an alternative. WearShield is now used across the continent to protect equipment in mines, power plants, quarries and mills against wear, impact and abrasion.

Wear coatings are not the only Sylmasta product with use in mining. The SylWrap Pipe Repair Kit range enables mines to permanently seal burst and leaking pipes in under 30 minutes, even when pressure cannot be turned off.

SylWrap eliminates the need to shut down systems, minimising disruption. It repairs difficult elbow joints, tee joints and welded joints, offering a more flexible and versatile option compared to heavy, bulky pipe repair clamps.

Repairs are effective on pipe diameters 15-300mm made of steel, stainless steel, iron, copper, PVC, GRP, clay, ceramic, concrete, lead and rubber. They are temperature resistant to 240ºC and pressure resistance can be built up to 30 bar.

All the products in a SylWrap Pipe Repair Kit have WRAS approval, meaning they are certified to British Standards as safe to use on pipes and fittings carrying drinking water.

Sylmasta employ lean manufacturing, which guarantees fresh product with long shelf life. Most products are available and ready to ship quickly. We have previously delivered a pipe repair kit for a burst water main to a local authority in British Columbia within five days of initial contact.

WearShield Epoxy Wear Compound

WearShield is an epoxy wear compound with high resin content heavily filled with alumina beads. It is applied to machine parts and surfaces to form an alumina-reinforced, hardened shell up to 6mm thick which offers ultimate resistance in the most abrasive of environments.

It protects a diverse range of processing and plant equipment including ash handling systems, scrubbers, silos, chutes and metal castings against wear, abrasion, impact, corrosion and chemical attack.

Two grades of WearShield are available. WearShield Standard has a 30-60 minute work time, enabling significant amount of epoxy to be mixed and applied across large areas at once without the threat of premature curing.

WearShield Rapid comes with a 5-minute work time, a 45-minute functional cure and a three-hour full cure. It reduces disruption and downtime by allowing equipment to be put back into use more quickly.

SylWrap Universal Pipe Repair Kit

The SylWrap Universal Pipe Repair Kit permanently seals leaking and burst pipes in under 30 minutes, even when pressure cannot be turned off by following a simple two-stage repair process.

Because flow does not need to be isolated, the draining of pipelines is not required before repair. This avoids time-consuming shutdowns of equipment and provides a cost-effective alternative to replacement.

When pipes are offline, Superfast Epoxy Putty is applied to fill cracks and holes. Wrap & Seal Pipe Burst Tape seals online leaks by amalgamating to form a solid rubber, maintaining pressure over the leak and thus sealing it.

The second stage of the repair involves overwrapping with a SylWrap HD Pipe Repair Bandage. SylWrap is a composite wrap with a water activated resin. It sets rock hard in minutes as it is wrapped and smoothed around a pipe, forming an impact resistant protective shell over the initial leak sealant.

SylWrap Pipe Repair Contractor Case

Where the Universal Kit seals one leak, the SylWrap Contractor Case is specifically designed for users making regular pipe repairs. It contains enough products to seal up to six live leaks on pipe diameters ranging from 15mm to 300mm, all kept in an easy-to-store red case.

Contractor Cases have proven popular in the mining industry for the ease and speed with which they make a repair. A mine with a Case on-site has everything available to seal a burst or leaking pipe as soon as a problem is identified. It is essentially a pipe first aid kit.

Other users of Contractor Cases include water companies in the UK, Mexico and Malaysia for making repairs on the public network. Contractor Cases are approved by major oil refineries in Iraq, and kept onboard freight ships and super yachts for emergency pipe repairs at sea and in dry dock.

Contractor Cases are highly customisable. There are currently 11 different variations available, each containing different product quantities for the repair of various pipe sizes depending on client needs.
